Final Reflection

EDUC 428 – Summer 2026

Completing this portfolio has helped me reflect on how much I have learned about English Learners throughout this course. At the beginning of the semester, I understood that English Learners needed language support, but I did not fully appreciate how culture, identity, family experiences, and educational backgrounds all influence student learning. As I explored each topic, I realized that supporting English Learners is about much more than helping students learn English. It is about creating classrooms where every student feels respected, included, and capable of succeeding.

One of the biggest ideas I will take away from this course is the importance of viewing multilingualism and cultural diversity as strengths instead of challenges. Every English Learner brings valuable experiences, knowledge, and perspectives into the classroom. As educators, it is our responsibility to build on those strengths rather than focusing on what students cannot yet do. Creating inclusive learning environments requires teachers to understand students' backgrounds, provide meaningful instructional supports, and develop strong relationships with both students and their families.

Throughout this portfolio, I explored several topics that have shaped my understanding of effective teaching practices. Learning about the changing demographics of English Learners showed me that every student's experiences are unique. Exploring inclusive classrooms and culturally responsive teaching helped me recognize the importance of building relationships and creating a sense of belonging. I also learned that simple instructional strategies, such as visual supports, scaffolding, collaborative learning, and layered questioning, can make a significant difference in helping English Learners participate with confidence. Finally, studying teacher advocacy reminded me that every educator has a responsibility to ensure students have equitable access to learning opportunities and feel supported throughout their educational journey.

As a future art teacher, I believe the art classroom can be one of the most welcoming places in a school for English Learners. Art gives students opportunities to communicate ideas that may be difficult to express through words alone. It allows students to share their cultures, identities, traditions, and personal experiences while building confidence and creativity. I want my classroom to be a place where every student feels comfortable taking creative risks, asking questions, and expressing themselves without fear of making mistakes. I also want to include artists from many different cultures so students can see themselves represented in the curriculum and learn to appreciate the experiences of others.

This course has changed the way I think about teaching English Learners. I now understand that effective teaching requires cultural competence, flexibility, patience, and a commitment to equity. My goal is to continue learning about the diverse backgrounds of my future students and to create lessons that celebrate their identities while supporting their academic growth. I hope every student who enters my classroom feels welcomed, respected, and encouraged to succeed. This portfolio reflects not only what I have learned throughout EDUC 428 but also the kind of teacher I hope to become.
