Diversity of English Learners Portfolio

EDUC 428 – Summer 2026

Welcome,

Throughout this course, I have learned that supporting English Learners involves much more than helping students learn English. It requires understanding their cultural backgrounds, recognizing the strengths they bring to the classroom, and creating learning environments where every student feels respected and included. Before taking this course, I knew that English Learners faced challenges in school, but I did not fully understand how language, culture, immigration experiences, and educational policies all influence a student's success.

This portfolio highlights five important topics that have shaped my understanding of working with English Learners: cultural backgrounds, creating inclusive classroom spaces, culturally responsive teaching, instructional strategies, and teacher advocacy. Each page includes a resource that helped deepen my understanding, along with my personal reflections on how the information will influence my future classroom.

As a future art teacher, I believe every student deserves to feel welcomed, valued, and capable of succeeding. Art provides students with opportunities to communicate beyond words, making it an especially meaningful space for English Learners to express their identities, cultures, and experiences. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom where students' languages and cultures are celebrated instead of viewed as obstacles.

This website represents what I have learned throughout EDUC 428 and how I plan to apply these ideas throughout my teaching career.
